Because of this it is important to for every family member to know can be a fun time with great memories. But before your family celebrates, make sure everyone knows about fireworks safety.<br /> <br />If not handled properly, fireworks can cause burn and eye injuries in kids and adults. In 2010, there were three fireworks related fatalities. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission fireworks were linked to hospital emergency department’s visits that treated 8,600 fireworks injuries. <br /><br /><div>  </div>Remember fireworks are illegal in Illinois without a permit. Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe:<br /><ul><li>Sparklers, smoke devices, glowworm pellets and other devices are legal, but dangerous to children. </li><li>Abide by all laws pertaining to fireworks. </li><li>Always read and follow fireworks' directions.</li><li>Do not use fireworks near dry grass or near flammable or combustible materials.</li><li>Fireworks are not toys. Never point or throw fireworks at another person</li><li>Never attempt to re-light or fix fireworks that have not gone off. </li><li>Many fireworks are designed to burn hot and/or explode. </li><li>Sparklers, which many people regard as harmless, burn at temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees fahrenheit (982 degrees Celsius).</li><li>Keep at a safe distance from fireworks' staging areas. </li><li>Matches are tools and not toys. Children should never play with matches and should especially never use them to light fireworks. </li><li>For the best possible fireworks safety, leave these dangerous device to professionals. If they have injured their eye, do not allow the injured person to rub or touch it, as this may cause even more damage to the injured area. Do not flush the eye out with water or attempt to place ointment on it either. If it is a burn, remove any clothing from the burned area and run cool, not cold, water over the burn (do not use ice). Call your doctor immediately<br /> <br />Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, but you'll enjoy them much more knowing your family is safe. Call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678.</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">When in a chat room remember that not everyone may be who they say they are: Example, that 15 year old girl from California may be a 35 year old man from New York.</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">If someone harasses you online, says something inappropriate, or does anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, contact your Internet service provider and talk to an adult that you trust.</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> In many states there are laws against cyber-harassment, threats or assaults being sent electronically or posted on blogs.</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> A friend you meet online may not be the best person to talk to if you are having problems at home, with your friends or at school. If you cannot find an adult to talk to in your school, church, or through local social services you can call the Covenant House at 1-800-999-9999, to get some help.</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> If you are thinking about running away, a friend online (that 15 year old girl) may not be the person to talk to. They may have anterior motives. If there is no adult in your community you feel comfortable talking to then call the National Runaway Switchboard at 1-800-621-4000.</li><li>Remember that although you don’t always feel that you can talk to your parents, they are there to help. In situations like the ones we listed above, your parents will help.</li></ol><br /><div></div><strong><u>Tips for Parents</u></strong><br /><br /><ol><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Keep the computer in a public place, such as family room, kitchen or recreation room.</li><li>Reduce the amount of time your child spends online, especially at night.</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Consider investing in a good monitoring program, to observe and monitor their behavior online.</li><li>Talk to your child about your expectations and the do’s and don’ts of online behavior.</li><li>Look for mood changes or changes in behavior, especially withdrawn behavior or sudden unexplained amounts of money.</li></ol>
