How to recognize teen drug use

As parents, we say that we want to know everything about our children but we are often uncomfortable or choose to ignore certain attitudes and behaviors in hopes of preserving peace in the family. We rationalize to ourselves that it is just a phase our teenagers are going through and will grow out of. By doing this we often overlook the warning signs that identify teen drug use.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><strong>How to Recognize the Signs of Teen Drug Use</strong></span><br /><ol><li>Observe the appearance and personal hygiene of your teen. Consider whether it has changed. Drug abusers often stop caring about their appearance and personal hygiene.</li><li>Monitor school grades of your teen. Drug abusers lose the ability to focus and their grades begin to drop.</li><li>Question unexplained weight loss in your teen. Drug abusers often experience weight loss. Determine if your child has been ill or recently began a new physical activity or diet. If not, weight loss is certainly a cause for concern.</li><li>Discover who your teen is friends with. Drug abusers often change friends because their old friends don't understand or approve of their drug use.</li><li>Examine the spending habits of your teen. Ask yourself if your teen suddenly needs extra money for lunch, school activities and such. Drug abusers can never get enough and need more and more money to support their habit.</li><li>Scrutinize any sneaky, deceptive behavior of your teen, like lying about where she is going and who she is with. Drug abusers know that drug use in unacceptable, especially to parents so they try to hide any and all evidence.</li></ol><strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Tips & Warnings:</span></strong><br /><ul><li>If any of these warning signs seem to apply to your teen it is time for you, as a parent, to take a closer look.</li><li>If several of these warning signs apply to your teen, intervention is necessary immediately.</li><li>Teen drug use often begins months, or even years, before parents actually become aware of it.</li><li>The consequences of teen drug use can be devastating, possibly even fatal.</li></ul>

Above the Influence

<br />I had the very distinct opportunity to be a facilitator through the <a href="http://www.mcyaf.com/">Maine Community Youth Assistance Foundation (MCYAF).</a> MCYAF was selected as one of three sites in Illinois and only eighteen nationwide to be part of the Above the Influence next advertising campaign.<br /><br /><div> </div><a href="http://www.abovetheinfluence.com/">Above the Influence</a>, is a compaign to help influence young people to remain drug free. According to it's website "It's a state of mind. It's about being yourself and not letting negative influence get to you."<br /><br /><div> </div>Just last week, I participated with another member of MCYAF to assist some very bright, energetic and influential young ladies all members of the Cheerleading squad from Maine South High School in Park Ridge. These young ladies gave up there early morning before school to participate. The goal to shape a message to help influence young people just like them to live a life Above the Influence.<br /><br /><div> </div>Now as a Police Officer of over 18 years it was an experience that I found to be both rewarding and enlightening. I have been working with youth for most of my law enforcement career. This group of very energetic and bright ladies came in with ideas that were both uplifting and eye catching.<br /><br />The Above the Influence campaign is part of the very thing that the MCYAF Organization is working to influence.<br /><br /><div> </div>MCYAF Coalition Mission, is to increase overall community capacity for advocacy, education, guidance and resources for families in order to promote alcohol free and drug free youth.<br /><br /><div> </div><br /><div> </div><strong>MCYAF Coalition Goals </strong><br /><ol><li>Reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among Maine Township youth</li><li>Effect change in public policy</li><li>Establish and strengthen collaboration and capacity to address teen alcohol, tobacco and drug use</li></ol><br /><div>After completing this portion of the program two of the teens ad campaign brand slogans were selected and potentially could go to regional and ultimately to the national ad campaign, for the Above the Influence brand. Regardless of the outcome these bright young ladies crafted messages that would both inspire, direct and lead toward both themselves and their friends in leading a drug free life.</div><br /><div> </div><br /><div>I was proud to participate and stand willing and able to represent the my agency and my organization in any effort to reduce drug, gang and violence involvement across the nation.</div><br /><div> </div><br /><div> </div><br /><div> </div>

Because your children may now see older students using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and may think they are cool and self-assured, your children may be tempted to try drugs too.<br /><br /><div> </div>Drug use goes up dramatically in the first year of middle school or junior high.<br /><br /><div> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><strong>To help your children make good choices during this critical phase, you should:</strong></div><br /><ul><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Make sure they are well-versed in the reasons to avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs;</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Get to know their friends by taking them to and from after-school activities, games, the library and movies (while being sensitive to their need to feel independent);</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Volunteer for activities where you can observe your child at school; and</li><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Get acquainted with the parents of your children’s friends and learn about their children’s interests and habits. If it seems that your child is attracted to those with bad habits, reiterate why drug use is unacceptable.</li></ul><br /><div> </div><strong>To make sure that your child’s life is structured in such a way that drugs have no place in it, you should:</strong><br /><ul><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">If possible, arrange to have your children looked after and engaged in the after-school hours if you cannot be with them. Give them a schedule and set limits on their behavior. Give them household chores to accomplish. Enforce a strict phone-in-to-you policy. Leave notes for them around the house. Provide easy-to-find snacks.</li><li>Get to know the parents of your child’s friends. Exchange phone numbers and addresses. Agree to forbid each others’ children from consuming alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in their homes, and pledge that you will inform each other if one of you becomes aware of a child who violates this pact. </li><li> Call parents whose home is to be used for a party. Make sure they can assure you that no alcoholic beverages or illegal substances will be dispensed. Don’t be afraid to check out the party yourself to see that adult supervision is in place. </li><li>Make it easy for your child to leave a place where substances are being used. Discuss with your child in advance how to contact you or another designated adult in order to get a ride home. If another adult provides the transportation, be available to talk to your child about the situation when he or she arrives home. </li><li>Set curfews and enforce them. Weekend curfews might range from 9 p.m. for a fifth-grader to 12:30 a.m. for a senior in high school. </li><li>Encourage open dialogue with your children about their experiences. Tell your child, “I love you and trust you, but I don’t trust the world around you, and I need to know what’s going on in your life so I can be a good parent to you.”</li></ul>

Explain the idea of addiction—that drug use can become a very bad habit that is hard to stop. Praise your children for taking good care of their bodies and avoiding things that might harm them.<br /><br /><div> </div><br /><div> </div><br /><div> </div><strong>By the time your children are in third grade, they should understand that:</strong><br /><br /><ul><li> foods, poisons, medicines and illegal drugs differ;</li><li>medicines prescribed by a doctor and administered by a responsible adult may help during illness but can be harmful if misused, and therefore children need to stay away from any unknown substance or container; and</li><li>adults may drink in moderation but children may not, even in small amounts because it’s harmful to children’s developing brains and bodies. </li></ul><br /><div> </div><strong>Before leaving elementary school, your children should know:</strong><br /><br /><ul><li> the immediate effects of alcohol, tobacco and drug use on different parts of the body, including coma and death;</li><li>the long-term consequences of drug use, including addiction and loss of control of one’s life;the reasons why drugs are especially dangerous for growing bodies; and</li><li>the problems that alcohol and other illegal drugs cause not only to the user, but to the user’s family and the world.</li></ul><br /><div> </div><strong>Questions elementary school children frequently ask about drugs:</strong><br /><br /><ul><li> <strong>Why would people want to put bad things in their bodies?</strong>  A possible answer might be that they might not realize how dangerous the bad things are; another is that they are not taking care of themselves. Sometimes people start using a drug just to see what it feels like, but it can turn into an addiction (like cigarettes) and it’s very hard to stop using it.</li></ul><br /><ul><li> <strong>Why can’t I taste that “grown-up” drink?</strong> A small amount of alcohol has a much greater negative effect on a child’s body than on an adult’s; even a small amount can sicken a child.</li></ul><br /><div> </div>

Try to act in a non-violent, respectful why when solving conflicts in your friendships and family.</li><li>Ask and learn about domestic violence. Give a presentation in school.</li><li>Call the police if you see or hear violence in progress. </li><li>Talk to your friends and classmate when they belittle girls, make jokes about violence, or ignore violence against girls and women. </li><li>Ask your teachers or principal to work with domestic violence programs to help make your school and surrounding community safe for girls and boys.</li><li>Write to music producers, movie companies, Internet businesses, video game producers, and TV stations to let them know that picturing violence against girls and women is not OK. </li><li>Make a contract with your classmates that abusive behavior and language is not OK and will not be tolerated in your school. </li><li>Form a group of friends and classmates who will work with domestic violence program staff, parents, teachers and school administrators to start a discussion about developing a school program or unit on dating and family violence. </li><li>Examine your life for violence and hurtful behaviors. When can I leave my teen alone?

I think I get asked this question atleast once a week. Do you think my teen is old enough to be home alone? How long can I leave my child at home and not get into legal trouble?<br /><br /><div> </div>My response to them is not as simple. I typically will say to them, have you talked to your child about what they should and should not do at home? Do they know what to do if something happens, like a fire, weather disasterAs children get older, they need to take on more responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is taking care of themselves. Whether it’s for a few minutes or a few hours, eventually every child needs to be able to stay home alone.<br /><br /><div> </div>Here are ten tips on deciding when your child is ready:<br /><ol><li>Your child should indicate a desire and willingness to stay alone - Children who are easily frightened or express an unwillingness to stay alone are probably not ready for this responsibility.</li><li>Your child should be showing signs of accepting the responsibility – Children who are able to get ready for school on time and complete homework and household chores with a minimum of supervision are illustrating their growing sense of responsibility.</li><li>Your child should be aware of the needs of others – Children who remember to tell you where they are going and when they will be back and are mindful of the promises they make are aware of other’s needs.</li><li>Your child should be able to consider alternatives and make decisions independently – Children who solve problems on their own and do not depend on their parents for every decision are demonstrating some of the skills they need to care for themselves.</li><li>Your child should be able to talk easily with you about interests and concerns – Good parent-child communication is needed to ensure that any fears or problems that arise because of staying alone can be quickly discussed and dealt with.</li><li>Your child should know how to react in situations such as – being locked out, being afraid, being bored, being lonely, and arguments with brothers and sisters.</li><li>Your child should know house rules about – leaving the house, having friends in, cooking and use of kitchen equipment, appropriate snacks and meals, talking with friends on the phone, and duties to be completed while home alone.</li><li>Your child should have good telephone skills – Such as a list of emergency numbers, knowledge of what to say in an emergency situation, how to respond if someone calls, and understanding of appropriate and inappropriate reasons for calling parents or other adults for help.</li><li>Your child should have good personal safety skills – Such as how to answer the door when alone, how to lock and unlock windows, what to do if approached by a stranger on the way home, what to do if they think someone is in the house when they get home, and what to do if someone touches them inappropriately.</li><li>Your child should have good home safety skills – Like kitchen safety (use of appliances, knives and tools), what to do if they smell smoke or gas- or in the event of a fire, what to do during severe storms, basic first aid techniques and how to know when to get help.</li></ol><br /><div>Age is one of those thing, I hate to put up for parents, yes its simple to say at this age they are old enough. But in reality it really depends, how mature they are, past experience with caring for themselves and others. Their emotional state, the ability to think critically are all factors that must be considered, before leaving a child alone. Both the child and the parent need to be certain they are ready. A trial period of one or two days a week could be tried first, allowing both the parent and the child time to assure themselves that they are ready for this next step in responsibility.</div><br /><div> </div>

Peer pressure can impact many areas of your child’s life, from how to dress, what brand of clothes to wear, or what new electronics are must haves. Marijuana is an inexpensive drug in today’s society, and most teenagers do not consider it harmful. Because this is all happening at once and at different rates it can make girls feel uncomfortable with their own. Those same raging hormones and interest in boys can also disrupt the existing social order. If you haven't had the "discussion" about sex with your tween by 10 or 11, now would the time. Listening during this key phase of your tween is paramount, especially when it involves boys. When your daughter mentions a boy, don't immediately jump to the possible attraction between them. Drug Alert: Bath Salts

Another drug new drug to be concerned about for parents is "bath salts" This new over the counter drug are being sold with names like “Ivory Wave,” “White Lightning” and “Hurricane Charlie.” But these typical average bath salts that you pour into the bathtub to soak in after a long, hard day to relax – these so-called bath salts are intended to be snorted, smoked or injected – and users are getting high off of them.<br /><br /><br />The $20 packets are available in corner stores, truck stops and on the Internet, and marketed as bath salts or sometimes plant food and come with the (often-ignored) disclaimer, "not for human consumption." They're not subject to regulation even though they contain various potent chemicals, including mephedrone, which is a stimulant. <br /><br />The powders often contain mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV, and can cause hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rates and suicidal thoughts, authorities say. The chemicals are in products sold legally at convenience stores and on the Internet as bath salts and even plant foods. However, they aren't necessarily being used for the purposes on the label.<br /><br />There are reports all over the country of people experiencing extreme psychotic episodes. "It's a derivative that's very similar to amphetamines, and its side effects are largely the same side effects we see with amphetamines in large dose," said Jeffrey Baldwin, professor of pharmacy practice and pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, which seems not to have experienced this scourge -- at least not yet. "Those side effects would be increased heart rate and blood pressure, not sleeping, not eating and eventually becoming paranoid."<br /><br />"If you take the very worst of some of the other drugs -- LSD and Ecstasy with their hallucinogenic-delusional type properties, PCP with extreme agitation, superhuman strength and combativeness, as well as the stimulant properties of cocaine and meth -- if you take all the worst of those and put them all together this is what you get. "The longest I heard was someone who was sedated for 12 days and the psychosis came right back," Ryan said. "The huge concern is the possibility that some of these effects could be permanent. We don't know because we've never tested it on humans." </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">At least with older drugs, sedation works and the patient returns to "normal," at least until they hit the streets again. </div><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Gary Boggs, an executive assistant at the DEA, said there's a lengthy process to restrict these types of designer chemicals, including reviewing the abuse data. But it's a process that can take years.</div><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Dr. Mark Ryan, director of Louisiana's poison control center, said he thinks state bans on the chemicals can be effective. He said calls about the chemicals have dropped sharply since Louisiana banned their sale in January.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Ryan said cathinone, the parent substance of the drugs, comes from a plant grown in Africa and is regulated. He said MDPV and mephedrone are made in a lab, and they aren't regulated because they're not marketed for human consumption. The stimulants affect neurotransmitters in the brain, he said.</div><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">"It causes intense cravings for it. They'll binge on it three or four days before they show up in an ER. Even though it's a horrible trip, they want to do it again and again," Ryan said.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Ryan said at least 25 states have received calls about exposure, including Nevada and California. He said Louisiana leads with the greatest number of cases at 165, or 48 percent of the U.S. total, followed by Florida with at least 38 calls to its poison center.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Dr. Rick Gellar, medical director for the California Poison Control System, said the first call about the substances came in Oct. 5, and a handful of calls have followed since. But he warned: "The only way this won't become a problem in California is if federal regulatory agencies get ahead of the curve. This is a brand new thing." </div><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">In the Midwest, the Missouri Poison Center at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center received at least 12 calls in the first two weeks of January about teenagers and young adults abusing such chemicals, said Julie Weber, the center's director. The center received eight calls about the powders all of last year.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Dr. Richard Sanders, a general practitioner working in Covington, La., said his son, Dickie, snorted some of the chemicals and endured three days of intermittent delirium. Dickie Sanders missed major arteries when he cut his throat. As he continued to have visions, his physician father tried to calm him. But the elder Sanders said that as he slept, his son went into another room and shot himself.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">"If you could see the contortions on his face. It just made him crazy," said Sanders. He added that the coroner's office confirmed the chemicals were detected in his son's blood and urine.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Sanders warns the substances are far more dangerous than some of their brand names imply.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">"I think everybody is taking this extremely lightly. As much as we outlawed it in Louisiana, all these kids cross over to Mississippi and buy whatever they want," he said.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">In northern Mississippi's Itawamba County, Sheriff Chris Dickinson said his office has handled about 30 encounters with users of the advertised bath salts in the past two months alone. I recently read a newspaper article in a Savanah newspaper. Where and when did this fashion start, a little research revealed that Lee D.Baker, Dean of Academic Affairs, from Duke University states that it is widely believed that sagging was adopted from the United States prison system where belts are prohibited.<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-2"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagging_%28fashion%29#cite_note-2"></a></sup> Belts are sometimes prohibited to avoid by hanging oneself, or to avoid being used as a weapon in fights. The clothing was later popularized in the youth culture through the influence of hip hop artists.<br /><br />A reference on <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sagging">Urban Dictionary</a> stated that originally,"...this was a prison thing that signified that you were another prisoner's property, ie bitch. Punks were forced to wear their pants this way so it would be easier for their masters to pull their pants down and assault them." It may more be that clothes issue din the prison system were not built for fashion, many were over sized, maybe multiple sizes for some. Since belt's were not issued, keeping your pants up became a very difficult for inmates to keep there pants up. Obviously this trend carried itself back into the community through exposure to released inmates.<br /><br /><br />But much of the style has also been popularized by media, music and pop culture. So why would youth accept this fashion appearance, which has limited functionality and can cause injury by tying up there feet. Obviously like many other fashion trends over the years. Rebellion! <br /><br /><br />It is appearance that led to the arrest of a University of Mexico <a href="http://www.kens5.com/sports/123986169.html">football player</a> at San Francisco International Airport in June 2011. According to the spokesperson for the airline, his dress violated the policies of the airline for passenger dress. The implication is that the player had his underwear exposed, which might indicate a concern for biohazard materials, or cross contamination of the seats.<br /><br />The question might be when is someone's appearance conflict with public safety issues and health issues? The next question would be what is the governments role in addressing these issues and how to do they address them? Lastly, what role do parents have in this? Should they be addressing this issue earliar on, before it becomes offensive, or inappropriate?<br /><br />What is your opinion? We want to hear it!

Drug Related Suicides - Up for Men!

The number jumped to 29,407 visits in 2009. <br /><br />Antidepressants increased over 155% among men aged 21 to 34, while suicide attempts involving anti-anxiety and insomnia medications increased by 93.4%.  In addition ER visits for suicide attempts among males 35 to 49 that involved narcotic pain relievers nearly doubled from 2005 to 2009 and these numbers almost tripled among men aged 50 and older.<br /><br />In the last several years there have been several high-profile deaths in the media where the cause of death or injury is an accidental overdose, suicide attempt, or suicide, which at times may blur the lines between the two.<br /><br />The growing problem of prescription drug abuse of painkillers, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and sleep aids. Because of the pervasiveness of the abuse the need for due diligence is imperative. According to Dr. Peter J. Delaney, the Director from SAMSHA who oversaw the study said that, "These drugs are effective, important treatments for pain, insomnia, and or depression, so we don't want to throw the baby out with bath water." Delaney said, "But we need to restrict access to prescription drugs, and keep them in safe, restricted places in homes." The latter helps prevent the medications from falling into the wrong hands. <br /><br />Suicide warning signs in teens or adults who may be considering suicide: <br /><ul><li>change in eating and sleeping habits </li><li>withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities </li><li>violent or rebellious behavior, running away </li><li>drug and alcohol use </li><li>unusual neglect of personal appearance </li><li>persistent boredom, difficulty concentrating, or a decline in the quality of schoolwork </li><li>frequent complaints about physical symptoms, often related to emotions, such as stomachaches, headaches, fatigue, etc. </li><li>not tolerating praise or rewards </li></ul><br /><div> Be alert to suicide warning signs such as those detailed above. If you see these signs, try to get the person help and if you believe them to be a danger to themselves, call 9-1-1. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 800-273-TALK.</div>

Drinking teens and young adults, are at a high rate of risk for all those activities. The report for SAMSHA released a statistics from July 4th, 2009, that showed 622 boys and 304 girls ended up in the emergency room.
